A local police force that deserved a website worthy of its mission

The Police de l’Ouest lausannois (POL) ensures the safety of several municipalities in the Ouest lausannois district from its police headquarters in Prilly. Operating 24/7, it carries out community policing, prevention, and intervention missions across its entire territory.
Its website needed to reflect this positioning: a serious, accessible institution focused on serving citizens. The challenge was twofold — providing a clear platform for everyday administrative procedures while projecting the professional and reassuring image expected of a public security force.
We were commissioned to design and develop a complete redesign, from content auditing through to deployment on Drupal.

Serving citizens, recruiting, informing — three missions within a single website

A police website is unlike any other. It must inspire trust at first glance and immediately guide users to what matters most: emergencies, administrative procedures, and news.
The POL website addresses three distinct types of users:
  • Citizens in urgent situations
Someone may need to file a complaint, recover a lost item, or contest a fine. The information must be accessible within seconds.
  • Job seekers and future recruits
POL is actively recruiting. A dedicated careers section highlights the different roles and guides future applicants through the recruitment process.
  • Citizens seeking information
Who governs POL? What are its key figures and missions? An organizational section answers these questions and supports institutional transparency.
  • Media and partners
News, prevention campaigns, annual statistics — a regularly updated editorial space strengthens the institution’s external communication.

    A needs-oriented navigation

The website’s main navigation was designed to meet the real needs of visitors. Rather than replicating the police’s internal structure, we placed user tasks at the center of the architecture.
Emergency numbers are highlighted from the homepage, ahead of any other information. The “Help me” section guides visitors to the right resource depending on their situation. The most common procedures are directly accessible from the main page, avoiding multiple levels of navigation.

An institutional blue, a clean typeface, and a strong visual identity

The website’s identity is built around a deep midnight blue, the official color of POL, extended into a system of secondary shades to ensure readability and visual hierarchy. This color choice immediately anchors the institution in a world of trust and rigor.
Abstract geometric shapes — derived from the institutional logo — are used to enhance the site’s hero sections, creating a cohesive digital identity without visual overload. The design is based on a clear, accessible, and modern sans-serif typeface.

Drupal as a foundation, flexibility as a guiding principle

The website is built on Drupal, a robust open-source CMS proven in institutional and government contexts. It ensures project longevity, data security, and a rights management system suited to an organization with multiple content editors.
A fully custom theme was developed, faithfully reflecting the visual identity and integrating flexible components that allow POL editors to build rich pages without relying on external providers. Training internal teams is an integral part of the mandate.
The site complies with web accessibility standards and is optimized for performance across all devices — as the majority of police website visitors access it via mobile, often in urgent situations.

A showcase to attract future law enforcement officers

The careers section of the website plays a strategic role: POL, like all police forces in the canton of Vaud, is actively recruiting and must appeal to demanding candidates. The site offers a clear recruitment journey, from initial contact through to formal application.
Job openings, employment conditions, the selection process, and information evenings for future applicants are presented in an attractive and structured way — a key HR communication tool for the institution

    In conclusion

Working for a public safety institution requires special attention to every word, every user journey, and every interface detail. We are proud to have applied our expertise to the Police de l’Ouest lausannois, and to contribute to strengthening the connection between POL and the citizens it protects.
